What Wainwright said:

"Base Brown marks the end of roads and farmsteads, of woods and green pastures, as one proceeds into the upper recesses of Borrowdale. It marks the beginning of wilderness and desolation. It is the first of rough and rugged heights extending to and around Wasdale and introduces its hinterland excellently".

Base Brown forms one side of the Seathwaite Valley, and on the western side, it is flanked by the hanging valley of Gillercomb. It is the summit of the northeast ridge of Green Gable, standing out into Borrowdale.

The top of Base Brown narrows considerably to the north of the summit, a prow-like ridge descending toward the falls of Sour Milk Gill. There is a prominent hanging stone here, impressively poised over the rim of the crags. Another feature is the Seathwaite Slabs, a set of slabs of rocks used for rock climbing practice by novices and conveniently located only minutes from Seathwaite.

The summit is primarily grass with a few boulders strewn around. A cairn marks the highest point.
