The flat pile of stones on Birdhouse Moor
What Wainwright said:

"The east ridge of Helvellyn starts as a narrow rock arĂȘte, known to all walkers as Striding Edge, and then gradually widens into the broad sprawling mass of Birkhouse Moor. A long grassy promenade is the main characteristic of the top".

Birkhouse Moor is an outlier of the Helvellyn range, part of the eastern ridge that stretches from Helvellyn down into Ullswater. Wainwright, however, treated it as a separate fell, thus ensuring its place here.

The eastern ridge of Helvellyn, comprising of Striding Edge, broadens and flattens into a one-mile wide grassy plateau that is marked as Birkhouse Moor. There are three subsidiary summits; Keldas, The Nab and an unnamed northern ridge.

Birkhouse Moor has two summits, the highest being on the main ridge to Striding Edge, which can be found by following a stone wall. A cairn has been built a little to the west, but the wall appears to cross the highest point. Helvellyn, guarded by its two arĂȘtes is the highlight.
