What Wainwright said:

"Mardale Ill Bell has received scant mention in Lakeland literature, and admittedly is mainly of nondescript appearance, yet one aspect of the fell is particularly good and appeals on sight to all who aspire to a little mild mountaineering. This is to the north-east, a boulder-strewn shoulder that divides into two rocky crags enclosing a corrie tarn."

Mardale Ill Bell rises to the south-west of Haweswater Reservoir and is the high point on the southern ridge of High Street. The northeastern face of Mardale Ill Bell forms the craggy backdrop to Blea Water, the deepest corrie tarn in the Lakes at 60m.

Two large cairns sit on the summit, the most northerly of the two being the top. The Coniston range is well seen from the summit while Blea Water and Small Water are seen from the rim of the crags.
