The trig pillar on top of Whernside

Whernside is the highest peak in the county of Yorkshire, despite the OS trig pillar actually residing across the county border in Cumbria. Despite being higher than both Ingleborough and Pen-y-ghent, Whernside tends not to receive the plaudits of the other 'Three Peaks' thanks to its unimpressive profile.

It's name is thought to derive from the words "querns", meaning millstones and "saettr", an area of summer pasture. Despite contradictory names, however, it should not be confused with Great Whernside which is some 30m lower in height
