The summit
What Wainwright said:

"A high mountain ridge leaps like a rainbow from the woods and fields of Brackenthwaite and arcs through the sky for five miles to the east. This ridge has three main summits of which the central one (and the finest) is known locally as Hobcarton Pike and to mapmakers as Hopegill Head”.

Hopegill Head is the middle of three fells between Braithwaite and Brackenthwaite, the other two being Grisedale Pike and Whiteside. Officially called Hopegill Head after Hope Gill, a valley that goes north-west from the summit.

Hopegill Head stands over an impressive wall of rock, Hobcarton Crag, that drops 130m to Hobcarton Gill. Despite appearance, the rocks are unsuitable for rock climbing thanks to the crumbly nature of Skiddaw Slate.

The summit is a small peaked point above Hobcarton Crag, a place not for the faint-hearted. The Isle of Man is visible on clear days as are the Scottish Border hills.
