"Travellers north along the main road over Dunmail Raise are accompanied by a rising ridge of high ground that culminates in a formidable wall of rough fell overlooking the pass itself and then falls abruptly to valley-level before Thirlmere is reached. This familiar height is Steel Fell".
Steel Fell rises to the west of Dunmail Raise and is easily climbed by the mile-long sloping ridge of Cotra Breast. A half mile wide triangular plateau lies on the summit with the highest point topped by a large cairn.
The summit itself, like many of the Lakeland fells, bears a different name; Dead Pike.
